DEPARTMENT OF Animal Nutrition
COLLEGE OF VETERINARY AND ANIMAL SCIENCES
MANNUTHY
Telephone: 0487 2370344 Ext. 234
1. The Nutrition Laboratory –Started in 1966. The analytical laboratory of the Department of Nutrition functions as a centre for regular and routine analysis of various feeds and fodders received from various government and private agencies for quality control. In addition to the routine analysis of feeds and fodders for proximate principles, major and trace elements in soil, feeds and biological materials are also being estimated regularly. Many of the modern sophisticated analytical equipments such as Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Kjeltec, Fibretec, Gas Chromatograph, Fluoride Analyzer, Spectrophotometer 1001, Microwave oven and Rusi-e-tec are presently available in the Department
2. Small Animal Breeding Station – Started in 1966. Centre for the supply of good quality rats, mice, guinea pigs, rabbits and hamsters to various research institutions in the Government and Private Sector, Schools, Colleges etc. all over the State and even to the institutions in the adjacent States.
3. Department of Nutrition – started functioning as an independent department under the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Kerala Agricultural University in the year 1976.
4. Feed Processing and Technology Unit - is functioning under the Department with the objective of screening of different feeds and fodders for anti nutritional factors, for undertaking investigations on feed processing and preservation techniques for the efficient utilization of agro-industrial byproducts, aquatic animal wastes, scarcity fodders viz. weeds, forest grasses, tree leaves etc. and to disseminate knowledge and information regarding these newer technologies to farmers and feed manufactures with the ultimate objective of increasing the production capacity of animals. Most of the major equipments such as feed mill, feed pulverizer, grinder and feed pelletizer are available in the Department for carrying out the processing studies.
5. Metabolism stalls - A metabolism stall and individual metabolism cages for conducting digestion and metabolism trials for large as well as small animals are available in the Nutrition Department.
6. Post graduate Education- M. V. Sc and Ph. D studies started in the Department in 1966
