History

The Department of Preventive Medicine started functioning under the department of Veterinary Medicine and Parasitology when the Kerala Veterinary College and Research Institute came into existence during 1955. Subsequently when Kerala Agricultural University was formed in 1972, the same set up was continued till 1976.The department became independent during 1976. Masters degree programme (M.V.Sc.) was started in the same year.

The name of the department was changed as the Department of Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine during 1994 when the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) syllabus was introduced for undergraduate programme.
